Nicholas Hausch, part of a group of Suffolk County teens who participated in a string of attacks against Latinos in 2008, was sentenced on Thursday to five years in prison for various assault charges related to the killing of Marcelo Lucero and other attacks.
Hausch was the final defendant to be sentenced in the Lucero killing. While Justice Robert W. Doyle, who handled the case, had previously said that the 19-year-old would face 5-25 years in prison, Hausch’s cooperation with the prosecution may have helped lighten his sentence.
In court, Hausch’s attorney also alleged that his client—free on bail since shortly after the Lucero killing—had been punched in the face for testifying against fellow defendant Jeffrey Conroy in March, and had lost several teeth from the attack. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota confirmed that his office was investigating the matter.
Newsday’s Carl MacGowan reports:
Before Hausch was sentenced Thursday, his attorney, Jason Bassett of Central Islip, said in court that Hausch had been punched by an unknown assailant in “direct retaliation” for testifying against Conroy.
Spota confirmed outside court that there is an investigation into the alleged attack on Hausch. “It clearly was the result of his testifying in court,” Spota said.
Spota declined to say whether anyone has been charged or whether arrests are imminent.
Bassett gave no details of the alleged incident. He said outside court Hausch lost several teeth.
