Despite the verdict in the Jeffrey Conroy trial, “the shame for Suffolk County’s law enforcement and political leadership remains,” according to a scalding editorial posted on The New York Times website today.
The editorial blasts Suffolk officials for fostering a climate of fear among Latino immigrants in the county:
This should be the case that finally shames all communities into toning down the anti-immigrant fervor and insisting on effective, evenhanded law enforcement — policing that provides equal protection to everybody in the community; reaches out to undocumented immigrants who too often are afraid to speak out when they are victims; and defends the humanity of all.
As Long Island Wins has reported, there was no official mandate forbidding Suffolk County police officers from asking about the immigration status of a crime victim or criminal complainant until 12 days after the Lucero killing.
