Paid Internship in Civil Rights Advocacy on Long Island

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is seeking an intern with interest and experience in community organizing to work specifically on immigrants’ rights issues on Long Island. The NYCLU is continuing a comprehensive advocacy campaign to build support for immigrants’ rights by engaging civil rights groups and non-traditional voices as advocates on this issue. Our initiative includes a public education campaign that would dispel myths about immigrants and educate Long Islanders about the important connections between immigrants’ rights and their own rights.

The intern will be responsible for leading this campaign throughout Long Island. Using a positive, rights-based approach to immigrants’ rights and immigration reform, the intern’s goal will be to educate the public, including NYCLU’s own membership base, and policymakers about the connection between immigrants’ rights and their own civil and human rights.

Specifically, the intern will be responsible for recruiting and leading a group of volunteer activists called an “Activist Task Force.” The intern’s main responsibility will be to organize workshops across Long Island on topics such as: LGBT and Immigration, Immigrant Students’ Rights, Racial Justice and the New Civil Rights Movement, and Immigrants’ Rights for Business Leaders. The intern will work with the Chapter Directors to develop curriculum for these workshops, will lead workshops, and will train Task Force members to lead workshops. The intern will be expected to conduct any other tasks as determined by the directors of the Nassau and Suffolk NYCLU chapters and the Statewide Advocacy Coordinator.

Applicants must demonstrate a passion for civil liberties, immigrants’ rights and social justice and should have some knowledge of constitutional law. While all applications will be considered, applicants from undergraduate and graduate programs in public policy, politics, social welfare and community development are encouraged to apply. An interest and experience in community organizing is essential, as is the ability to think creatively and outside the box.

The internship will be based part time in the Nassau County office in West Hempstead, and part time in the Suffolk County office in Central Islip. The intern will be expected to work 15 regular business hours during the week, splitting their time between offices, with some evenings and weekend work. The intern will receive a stipend of $1,000 per semester. The internship is for one semester, beginning in January 2012, with the possibility of continuing through the summer.
