“Panel of Experts” Divided on What Arizona Law Says

The Arizona Republic convened a “panel of experts” to analyze the new Arizona anti-immigrant law. The Republic asked the experts, criminal lawyers and law professors, to look at specific hypothetical situations and determine what the police could and couldn’t do under the circumstances. In most cases, the experts divided on the law.

Phrases like the law “does not give guidelines” on who can be stopped, what a detained person must present to identify herself, and what officers are supposed to do if a person refuses to present ID occur repeatedly among panel members.

While Gov. Brewer and Sarah Palin have said that people concerned that the new law will lead to racial profiling just need to read it, the panel of experts say that reading the law does not provide reassurance that the rights of dark-skinned Americans will be protected..
