Rallies for Immigration Reform Enter 15th Week

I was part of a group from the Long Island Immigrant Alliance that met with Representative Carolyn McCarthy on Holy Thursday. She began by congratulating us on the great turnout at the Washington Rally on March 21. She said that Congresspeople had gotten insulted by Tea Partiers during the days before we came down and that it was good to see us there in such huge (and orderly) numbers.

The combined Passover/Easter holidays did not put a damper on the spreading mass mobilizations for immigration reform.

To give you an idea of just how widespread these actions are, Holy Thursday saw a prayer vigil at a Congressional office in St. Joseph’s Missouri.

The Trail of Dreams walk from Miami to Washington made it into Chapel Hill, North Carolina over the Easter weekend where students in the college town held a rally for immigrant rights. Four undocumented students are walking the whole way and expect to arrive in D.C. in time for a large immigrant rally.

A post-Easter vigil was held by two dozen African American clergy in Atlanta, Georgia.
