Ron Paul And “Anchor Babies”

Ron Paul’s association with libertarianism may not carry over to his views on immigration. When running for president two years ago, Paul attacked John McCain’s history as an immigration reformer. His ads also called for taking citizenship away from children born in the United States to parents who are undocumented. This would require repealing or amending the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to virtually all babies born within our borders. Paul refers to these children using the pejorative “anchor babies”.  Here is his answer to a question about amending the 14th Amendment, which granted non-whites born in the U.S. full citizenship rights:

it was the 14th Amendment. It wasn’t in the original Constitution. ...And somebody who illegally comes in this country as a drug dealer, is he under the jurisdiction and their [sic] children deserve citizenship?

Of course, his proposal does not just go after drug dealers.

Ron Paul got a 100% rating from the anti-immigrant group FAIR, he favors hospitals reporting sick and pregnant undocumented immigrants for arrest and deportation, and he voted to force bi-lingual Federal employees to speak only English to the Spanish-speaking public.
