Sen. Chuck Schumer, the head of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, told reporters that he expects to have an immigration reform bill ready by Labor Day. Schumer said a major sticking point on passage of a bill, the future of employment-based visas, will be worked out.
Employers want additional employment-based visas in technology to keep the United States competitive in the global market. Labor unions worry that lower-skilled employment-based immigrants hurt wages. Schumer is looking to reconfigure the employement visa system to account for labor market variability more exactly.
According to the Associated Press:
Ana Avendano, AFL-CIO’s director of immigration policy, said Schumer’s “one size doesn’t fit all” view is shared by labor. “We want employers to have workers they need, but the key is determining when there is a real need, not one employers make up when they import temporary workers.”
