A memo outlining the proposed comprehensive reform of immigration law by Senator Schumer has been posted online. This article looks at the change in Family-Based Immigration under the proposal.
One of the biggest hurdles in family immigration is the extremely long waiting lists. For example, a U.S. citizen applying for his brother in Mexico can expect to wait almost 14 years for him to even be interviewed for his green card. The spouses and children of permanent residents often have to endure separations of six years or more before they are reunited.
The Schumer proposal would eliminate all current backlogs within eight years.
And it would create a special new category for the husbands, wives, and minor children of those who are here with green cards so that these families can be united within a year of applying.
The Schumer proposal would substantially reduce waiting times for all Family-Based Preference Immigrants and end the trauma of long separations.
As I have written elsewhere, it also creates substantial new rights for LGBT families.
