Tomorrow marks the beginning of Immigration Heritage Week in NYC. I just posted information about it as an event, but I was so impressed by the initiative that I decided to cross-post it on the blog, as well.
In the past, we’ve written about Mayor Bloomberg’s immigration policy, and how sensible and far-reaching it seems in comparison to that of some elected officials on Long Island, and, more specifically, in Suffolk County.
One great example is New York City’s Executive Order 41, which Cristina Jimenez blogged about a month ago.
Jimenez writes:
Marcelo Lucero’s murder and subsequent reports indicating that Latino immigrants in Suffolk County have been routinely victims of harassment and violent attacks are a clear sign that Suffolk’s policymakers need to do more. New York City’s Executive Order 41 is a good model to follow. This order ensures that immigrants can access city services and agencies without fear of uncovering their immigration status.
Immigration Heritage Week is another great example of Bloomberg’s public support for immigrants and immigrant culture in the city, even if it’s not related to policy.
Here’s the information from the event listing:
Head into the city for the Seventh Annual Immigrant Heritage Week (IHW), which runs from April 15-21. Immigrant Heritage Week is an initiative organized by Mayor Bloomberg’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to celebrate the contributions of immigrants and the diversity that makes New York City so great.
From an organizer:
This year there will be over 170 fun and free events in all five boroughs with something for everyone from musical performances, film screenings, events for children and the whole family, workshops and discussions, and much more. I hope you can make it out to some of our great events!
