Here are a few random thoughts on disparate subjects:
1. I have been thinking about that strange article from Youth For Western Civilization hailing the increased output of children by whites in Russia under Putin’s tutelage that I blogged on this morning. In addition to what I wrote, I thought it was telling that Youth For Western Civilization had included Russia in The West.
These defenders of Western Civilization always tend to be a bit particular about what is The West. We all sort of know that they mean The White People, but they don’t like to be called racist, so they try to define The West using some dicey language.
If Russia is The West, then Stalinist Communism is part of Western Civilization, isn’t it? Or is it just stuff we like that is Western?
2. Tuesday night I spoke at Judson Memorial Church following a yet-to-be completed documentary by Luis Argueta on the Postville, Iowa ICE raids that left a community devastated. The video was the 29 most powerful minutes of cinema that I have experienced in the last year. I almost hope the piece doesn’t become a full-length documentary because it was so good and so compact.
3. We are all concerned about the implications of the Tuesday election in Mass. re immigration reform. All is not lost, but some may be delayed. In any event, we need to really step up our effort to push for reform and keep the pressure on Senator Schumer, who is our most valuable ally apart from the President.
4. Speaking of Schumer, Lucius Ware, Luis Valenzuela, Nadia Marin, Maryann Slutzsky, and I visited Schumer’s Long Island Office yesterday to talk with Schumer’s LI regional director Gerard Petrella about Schumer’s bill. Give the Long Island office a call to let Sen. Schumer know that you support Comprehensive Immigration Reform and appreciate all the work he is doing. Call 631-753-0978.
5. I was up at the mothership today to look at the new Long Island Wins website. Now, I know back in mid-November I said we were close to relaunching, but now we really are. I think we will have the new site up and running in three to five weeks. It looks great. Fortunately for me, Ted is doing all the work on this, leaving me free to criticize.
6. Our petition in favor of immigration reform that I wrote two months ago has more than 450 signatures. We originally hoped to get 150! That means that at least 1,200 e-mails have been sent to our leaders by our readers. Thanks.
