Four of the seven teens who took part in the hate crime attack that killed Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero were sentenced Wednesday. None of the four attackers received more than seven years in prison.
This morning, I blogged about the potential sentences faced by Jose Pacheco, Jordan Dasche, Christopher Overton, and Anthony Hartford.
To those following the case, the sentences did not come as a surprise. Justice Robert W. Doyle set the sentencing bar for the teens when, during a February plea, he told fellow attacker Kevin Shea that Shea would receive no more than 10 years in prison. Considering Shea’s prominent role in the attacks, it appeared unlikely that each of the other teens would receive more than a 10-year sentence.
Newsday’s Carl MacGowan reports on the sentences from criminal court in Riverhead:
Appearing one by one before a state justice in the Suffolk courthouse near Riverhead four of the teenagers who admitted involvement in the 2008 attack that led to the death of Marcelo Lucero were sentenced Wednesday to spend the next several years in prison.
Jose Pacheco, who had been the second of the teens to admit his involvement in the attack when he pleaded guilty last year, was sentenced to 7 years in prison by State Supreme Court Justice Robert W. Doyle.
Jordan Dasch, who admitted driving the teens to Patchogue and taking part in the assaults of Lucero and two other Hispanic men, was sentenced to 7 years behind bars.
Anthony Hartford, who pleaded guilty in May to first-degree gang assault and other charges, was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Christopher Overton was sentenced to 6 years in prison for the attack on Lucero.
Pacheco, Dasch and Overton had pleaded guilty to first-degree gang assault, fourth-degree conspiracy and other charges in connection with a string of attacks on Hispanic men that culminated with the fatal stabbing of Lucero on Nov. 8, 2008, near the Patchogue train station.
