The Deepening Impact of SB 1070 on Arizona

After passage of SB 1070, Arizona began to feel real pain, and only part of it came from the boycott organized by those who support human rights.

The supporters of the law won passage by depicting the state as one engulfed in kidnappings and drug violence. This, as much as organized protests, has made Arizona a no-go zone for family vacations.

In addition, many dark-skinned Americans are staying away from Arizona because they don’t want to be bothered by the police. Here is what Arizona University found when they were seeking someone to fill a high-level job:

The University of Arizona’s senior vice president, Joel Valdez, officially retires this week. Planning VP Bob Smith is taking over in the interim.

Provost Meredith Hay is leading a national search committee for Valdez’s replacement. She commented on the search during a strategic planning meeting last month. According to meeting minutes: “The committee is having difficulty attracting a diverse pool of candidates. The Hispanic candidates have all withdrawn, citing SB 1070 as an issue of sufficient concern regarding bringing their families to Arizona.”
