The First Words At The D.C. Rally Were About Marcelo Lucero

Some of Suffolk’s politicians long for the day that Marcelo Lucero’s name is forgotten. Then the old racism that drove them to prominence can be practiced once again for political advantage as it had so successfully before November 8, 2008.

They need to listen to the message delivered at the mass rally in Washington today. The very first speaker told more than 100,000 marchers about the murder of Marcelo Lucero by a lynch mob. Of the young attackers, the lead-off speaker Geraldo Rivera said that after the assault they “thought that they were justified in murdering Marcelo Lucero just because he was Latino. I’ll tell you where they got this message of hate. They got it from their parents. And their parents got it from hatemongers.”

Some political leaders say they are proud of helping to create a hostile environment towards Suffolk’s immigrants. But as long as Marcelo Lucero’s name is remembered throughout New York State and across the nation, this sentiment is the pride of a fool.
