A few weeks ago, we followed the progress of The Workplace Project’s Saul Linares as he and several compatriots marched from Hempstead, Long Island, to Washington, D.C., to stir up support for comprehensive immigration reform.
Saul said he was inspired to organize the march after seeing the “Trail of Dreams” walkers, who left Miami on January 1, embarking on a 1,500-hike to Washington, D.C. Those students—walking in support of the DREAM Act—are still on the road, now passing through North Carolina, and other walkers from around the country plan to meet them in D.C.
Among those meeting the Miami DREAM walkers in D.C. will be one group departing from New York City on Saturday, April 10, at 9am. The NYC walkers—organized by the New York State Youth Leadership Council—will leave from Jay Hood Wright Park in Washington Heights for those interested in showing support, and possibly walking with them.
Here’s what the NYC walkers described the journey on their Facebook page:
Join a group of youth and students from New York to walk in solidarity with the trail of dreams from Miami. They will walk 220 miles from New York to Washington, D.C., and meet with the Miami walkers.
At the same time you can join the walk-a-thon! We will walk with them the first day to New Jersey. Support equal opportunities for undocumented students and equal rights for every immigrant. Let’s demand the passage of the DREAM Act and immigration reform NOW!

What’s next after March 21st?
On April 10th, we urge YOU, your communities, your friends and your families to join us as we join young leaders from across New York to launch the NEW YORK TRAIL OF DREAMS.
A group of brave Dreamers will depart from New York City for a 3-week, 220-mile walk to Washington DC to bring attention to the broken immigration system and share their stories as they call for the DREAM Act and humane immigration reform. Building on the momentum from the 3/21 March for America, this action on 4/10 will also pressure Senator Schumer to introduce a just and humane immigration bill.
WHAT: NEW YORK TRAIL OF DREAMS LAUNCH!
WHERE: JAY HOOD WRIGHT PARK (175th and Fort Wash Ave – A to 175th)
WHEN: SATURDAY APRIL 10TH
TIME: STARTING AT 9AM
All are invited to contribute to and walk in solidarity with the walkers on April 10th – they will be walking to Jersey City on Day 1 of the journey. As the action develops we’ll be sending more info out too. Please see the attached flyer.
