A few weeks ago, I blogged about the bilingual education debate and a new documentary about the subject called Speaking in Tongues.
Bilingual education offers an alternative to traditional ESL programs for non-native English speakers, creating classrooms where students divide their instructional time between English and another language. Increasingly, bilingual schools across the country are offering a wider diversity of languages to students, like Hebrew and Italian, expanding beyond the more common Spanish-language models.
Speaking in Tongues follows the lives of four children who are learning to speak another language, and deals with the tension surrounding bilingualism in light of English-only initiatives. You can watch the film online at the PBS website from now until September 17, and you can chat with filmmaker Marcia Jarmel this evening from 5-6pm on the progressive blog firedoglake.
