Trial of Jeff Conroy For Killing Of Marcelo Lucero May Start Wednesday

The trial of Jeffrey Conroy, accused killer of Marcelo Lucero, may begin as early as Wednesday, according to Newsday.

It took two weeks to select a jury, in part because of widespread prejudice against Latinos in Suffolk County. For example, Newsday reports the following exchanges with jurors during jury selection:

“Why are illegal aliens allowed to testify?” one prospective juror asked [Judge] Doyle before being excused. “That’s OK in the eyes of the government?”

“If these people are going to testify, are they going to be arrested after they testify being that they are illegal?” asked another prospective juror, who was summarily excused.

This racism has been noted in many blogs reporting on the case, as well as in the pages of the New York Times.
