The New York Immigration Coalition reports that there are now 200 buses going to D.C. for the March 21 rally from locations around the state. While the bulk are leaving from New York City, five buses are going from Long Island. Two more are leaving from Westchester and Putnam Counties. Buses are also leaving from Binghamton, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo.
Many buses are leaving from colleges around the state. CUNY schools are filling whole buses. Some student organizations at Long Island and Upstate schools have rented vans to carry even more students. Unions have also been extremely active in promoting participation, as have faith communities.
This is the largest mobilization for a D.C. rally ever attempted by the New York Immigration Coalition, of which the Long Island Immigrant Alliance is a member. The Coalition may add as many as 20 more buses, since most of the buses are completely full.
I have served as a board member of the Coalition since 1991. I can honestly say that a month ago many of us thought that 150 buses would be hard to fill. The surge in participation is extremely heartening.
