Arizona’s controversial immigration law SB 1070 is scheduled to go into effect on July 29. For the days leading up to, the day of, and the days after there will be rallies, marches, and vigils to demonstrate opposition to the law.

On July 16, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, as part of its “30 Days 30 Events for Human Rights,” will be holding a solidarity vigil in resistance to the bill. The organization suggests that attendees leave their ID’s at home. (More Info)

Sponsored by the Churches United to Save and Heal (CUSH), Families for Freedom (FFF), American Friends Service Committee‐NJ (AFSC), New York New Sanctuary Coalition (NYNSC), Immigrant Defense Project (IDP), Wind of the Spirit, The Black Institute, and the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR), a march across Brooklyn Bridge and rally will take place July 29, starting at 9:30am.

Marchers are to gather at Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn, at 9:30am and will march to Manhattan’s Foley Square where there will be an 11:30am rally.

The event’s flier states:

On July 29, Arizona intends to legalize racial profiling with a new law known as SB 1070. New Yorkers along with the rest of the nation will be rallying to resist this law and to call for an end to the mass detention and deportation of immigrants.

On this day immigrants and their allies will march across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in solidarity with Arizona in the spirit of bridging borders and uniting cultures to demand:

•Policies that affirm Family Unity, Due Process and Fairness;

•That local law enforcement in Arizona and across the country focus on protecting our communities, not destroying them; and

•That President Obama and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) immediately halt the Criminal Alien Program, Secure Communities, 287(g), and all partnerships between ICE and local law enforcement.

The Long Island Faith Community will also be holding a solidarity vigil, sponsored by the Long Island Jobs with Justice, Long Island Council of
Churches, Long Island Immigrant Alliance, and Long Island Wins, in opposition to the Arizona bill. This event takes place Saturday, July 31, at noon at the Port Jefferson town hall.
