Victim’s brother indicts Levy

The brother of murder victim Marcello Lucero told Newsday yesterday that Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy bore part of the blame for his brother’s death. “Steve Levy planted the seeds of hate indirectly by making people hate Hispanics”, he said.
Levy has long been antagonistic towards the county’s Hispanic community, going so far as to get rid of his entire Hispanic advisory board a year after he took office. As the county’s leading Democrat, he has taken his party in a decidedly anti-immigrant direction. He and his supporters have repeatedly introduced anti-immigrant legilsation and proposed initiatives designed to stir up hatred against immigrants.
In his first year in office he announced his first anti-immigrant initiative at the meeting of an extremist organization which had characterized undocumented immigrants as “terrorists” and immigrant rights groups as “terrorist sympathizers”. The spokesman for the organization had discussed the need to kill me one day in the halls of the county legislature. Levy had been begged not to legitimate this group, but instead he catered to it.
When immigrant advocates met with Levy they noted that he prominently displayed literature from FAIR, an organization described as an anti-immigrant hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
