VIDEO: Suffolk Songwriter Eulogizes Slain Ecuadorian Immigrant Marcelo Lucero

Last week, 19-year-old Medford resident Jeffrey Conroy was convicted of first-degree manslaughter as a hate crime in relation to the 2008 stabbing death of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero.

During the month-long trial, Marcelo’s brother, Joselo, was accompanied at the courthouse by dozens of different friends and supporters.

One of those supporters was Robert Bruey, a singer-songwriter who lives on the North Fork. Aside from showing support for Joselo at the trial, Bruey also composed a song about Marcelo shortly after the November 2008 hate killing.

Although Bruey wrote “Perdóneme Hermano” (Forgive Me Brother) shortly after Lucero was killed, I recently came across this YouTube video of the song, and I thought I’d post it. For more info on Bruey and his music, click here.

The tribute:

Lyrics:

Perdóneme Hermano

No sailboat brought me here,

No Mayflower sit down prayer,

Came here to live and to breathe,

Won’t take more than I need.

(Chorus):

Perdóneme Hermano,

Perdóneme Hermano

To Mother send a wire,

These clothes are not yet dried,

And blood is not like water,

When you’re running for your life.

Mom says come back home,

You’ll find a place, your own,

We see the love you send,

Your heart, your sweat, your hands.

(Chorus):

Perdóneme Hermano,

Perdóneme Hermano.

To Mother send a wire,

These clothes are not yet dried,

And blood is not like water,

When you’re running for your life.

Now I stand down cold.

Is there no mercy you can show?

If not for I but for those,

I’ll say nothing, I’ll go.

(Chorus):

Perdóneme Hermano,

Perdóneme Hermano

To Mother send a wire,

These clothes are not yet dried,

And blood is not like water,

When you’re running for your life.

Perdóneme Hermano,

Perdóneme Hermano
