Wakeup Story for Suffolk Legislature

The Long Island Immigrant Alliance held a unique event at the Suffolk Legislature this morning. Ted Hesson will have a full report, but I just wanted to let you know what happened.
Last week I was talking to a legislator about the Southern Poverty Law Center’s report on hate crimes against Latinos in Suffolk. I asked him if the legislators had read the report. He said “they read the Newsday articles, but I doubt many of them read the report”.
Imagine, the legislators did not read the twenty seven page report on human rights abuses in their own county!
So several of us decided to organize a reading of the report before the legislature.
In just two days we assembled twenty readers to each read a three minute portion of the report. So, for an hour, legislators who have turned a blind eye to hate crimes in Suffolk were forced to watch as students, retirees, immigrants, and social workers read the report to them.
It is on the record now. None of them can say, as they did after the murder of Marcelo Lucero, that they did not know what was going on.
We need your help-Sign our online petition to Steve Levy.
