Regardless of your views on immigration policy, most Long Islanders can agree that tensions around the issue can hurt our communities: People of goodwill don’t want to see their town or village suffer from anti-immigrant rhetoric, division, and hate crimes.

That’s why Long Island Wins launched the Welcoming Long Island campaign, part of a national grassroots effort to create communities that welcome all residents, native- or foreign-born. If you’d like to learn more about the national work of Welcoming America, and how that work can extend to Long Island, a good place to begin could be a screening of Welcome to Shelbyville in Manhattan tonight. Click here for details.

The documentary film chronicles how a small southern town reacts to an influx of Somali immigrants, and how a local welcoming campaign helps residents address tensions in the community. Filmmaker Kim A. Snyder will be on-hand for a discussion after the film.

WHEN:
Monday, February 7, 6:30-8:30pm

WHERE:
Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center
