UPDATED: For the First Time, “What Killed Marcelo Lucero?” Comes to Patchogue

A play inspired by the 2008 hate-crime killing of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero will be performed on April 26 in Patchogue, the site of the attack against Lucero.

Over the past few years, “What Killed Marcelo Lucero?” has traveled across Long Island and the New York City area, but this will mark the first time that the theatrical work visits the village where Lucero was slain.

The play, written and directed by Welcoming Long Island organizer Margarita Espada, challenges viewers to tackle difficult questions about immigration, community, and violence, and will be performed as part of a public engagement project by Welcoming Long Island, which is a part of Long Island Wins.

The play is produced by Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, a theater group headed by Margarita, and will be presented in partnership with the Long Island Immigrant Alliance.
