Will Anti-Immigrant Election Rhetoric Deepen Divisions?

Westchester Congressional candidate Jim Russell has been actively fighting to take citizenship away from the US-born children of undocumented immigrants. That did not attract much negative attention. It was only when writings of his from a decade ago calling for separate schools for black and white children and warning of Jewish threats to civilization were re-discovered that he suddenly faced a firestorm of criticism.

We have moved so far to the right in the immigration debate, that a politician urging the revocation of citizenship for American-born kids is not considered beyond the pale until he goes after blacks and Jews!

The increasing acceptance of really vile anti-immigrant political rantings as though they were elements of legitimate political discourse is appalling. The failure of officials elected with significant support by Latino, Muslim, and Asian-American voters to speak out immediately against the growing lunacy on the Right endangers immigrant communities, particularly those outside the traditional urban areas of newcomer settlement.

The press needs to give the same attention to Carl Paladino’s statements on immigration as they give to his taste in pornography.
