Last night I attended the DREAM Act vigil organized by the New York Immigration Coalition at St. Teresa’s Church on the Lower East Side. Founded before the Civil War to minister to Irish immigrants, the church was a fitting place for supporters of today’s immigrants to come together and pray.
We’ll need last night’s prayers. It looks like there may be three Republicans voting for the DREAM Act in the Senate, which still leaves us short of the sixty votes needed for victory. In the House, the bill is more than a dozen votes short of passage.
The prime target in the House is now Buffalo Democrat Brian Higgins. I know that most of my readers live here on Long Island or in NYC, but a lot of you have kids going to school at the University of Buffalo, Buff State, and Canisius College, among other colleges in the city.
So give them a call and tell them to call Higgins at 866-587-3023.
Neither the House nor the Senate vote will come before 3:30pm today, so there is still time to make a few more calls.
