Home > LI Culture > Support Welcoming Long Island at the Brentwood Cultural Street Festival [PETITION]
Head to the Brentwood Cultural Street Festival this Sunday, September 25, where you’ll be able peruse local artwork, experience a diverse range of music and dance, and meet members of Welcoming Long Island campaign.
The festival will mark the first public outing by Welcoming Long Island’s Islip committee, which is open to residents in Brentwood, Central Islip, and Bay Shore.
Welcoming Long Island, a campaign of Long Island Wins, seeks to promote mutual respect and cooperation between recent immigrants and their US-born neighbors, and to make our communities welcoming for all residents.
At the festival this Sunday, you’ll be able to hear salsa, Japanese taiko drumming, and traditional African music from Bakithi Kumalo, a South African musician who was featured on Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album.
If you’re from Brentwood, Central Islip, or Bay Shore, you’ll also be able to sign up for the Islip Committee of the Welcoming Long Island campaign. Even if you’re not from those areas, you can show your support for the campaign by signing this petition:

Brentwood NY—Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, the Town of Islip & Supervisor Phil Nolan, and State Assemblyman Phil Ramos, are excited to present the BRENTWOOD CULTURAL STREET FESTIVAL 2011, an annual free admission event to be held this year, rain or shine, on Sunday September 25 from noon to 6 p.m. on Suffolk Avenue beginning at the Brentwood Rd./Washington Ave. intersection and extending westward for 3 blocks.
In addition to children’s activities and tented art exhibits featuring some of our finest painters and other visual artists, exciting bands and other performing artists will grace the Town’s covered stage with culturally diverse styles: The Salsa orchestras MAMBO LOCO and SAZON MIX; a traditional African band led by PAUL SIMON’S bass player BAKITHI KUMALO; the bomba jam band PAPO VAZQUEZ & TROMBOMBAZO; the BEATLES legacy band THE LIVERPOOL SHUFFLE; exotic belly dancer ELISHANYA; the Japanese taiko drum ensemble RYU SHU TAIKO; the bilingual alternative rock band CORRIENTES; the folk band HANK STONE & ROUGH FOLK; and more! (Performer photos attached.)
Teatro Yerbabruja is a nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to use the arts in its numerous programs as a means of achieving constructive social change in Long Island’s diverse communities. Part of that mission is to hold free-admission festivals at which diverse audiences come together to see and hear culturally diverse artists.
This event would not be possible without the help of our friends and supporters, including substantial funding by Suffolk County.
