We’ve seen the tragedy of 9/11 through the eyes of Western filmmakers in movies like United 93 and Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. But what about a film looking at the roots of the tragedy from an Arab perspective?
Set in Afghanistan in 1996 during the country’s civil war and its aftermath – in which thousands of Afghans lost their lives, families, and homes – Kelebek, or “The Butterfly,” tells the story of Yusuf, a Turkish man who comes to the war-torn area as part of a humanitarian aid effort
With this devastation as the backdrop, Yousef meets a person the world will know about on September 11, 2001, years before the attack on the Twin Towers.
Kelebek, which will be screened on December 3 at the Turkish Cultural Center Long Island, was originally released on May 1, 2009, and was shot in the United States, Afghanistan, Istanbul, and the southeastern Turkish city of Şanlıurfa.
