The fierce tiger glares at Wu Song threateningly as a vicious snarl escapes his bared, jagged teeth. Wu Song is carefully planning his next strategic move as the two circle each other in a slow, dance-like manner. Suddenly, both man and tiger are caught in a tense struggle as they fight to defend their own life – who will win?
Luckily, no blood was spilled, since both man and tiger are puppets, and were part of Chinese Theatre Works’ “Hao Bang Ya, Tigers!” puppet show, which came to the Bronx Zoo on August 21 and 22.
The program featured traditional Chinese glove puppetry, a type of local Chinese opera with origins that date back to the 17th century. The epic battle described above is from a 15th century story called, “Wu Song Fights the Tiger,” and the tale of Wu Song is just one of several that was acted out on the puppetry stage.
