Introducing LIW Culture Fellow Angel Canales

The Long Island Wins Immigration Reporting Fellowship program gives journalists the opportunity to cover immigration issues on Long Island over a period of six months.

While the fellowship program is still in its infancy, it has already yielded great results. In the spring, Leslie Josephs reported on international immigration trends from Costa Rica and Mexico, writing about issues like migration within Latin America and the dangers faced by female migrants heading to the US. Now, Long Island Wins is pleased to introduce the recipient of our fall 2010 culture reporting fellowship. Angel Canales, a cross-platform journalist with reporting experience on Long Island, will contribute to the LI Culture and Feature sections of the website, exploring the vast cultural contributions that immigrants make to the communities on Long Island.

Here’s a bit about Angel:

Angel Canales is a multimedia journalist based in New York City and a native of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Angel’s interest in social justice led to a journalistic career covering issues like immigration and hate crimes.  He saw the need to become a storyteller after serving in active duty for the US Navy on board the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. During his time in the Navy, he felt he needed an outlet to talk about the life-changing experience, which was at times lighthearted and at times traumatic.

Angel has experience reporting on Long Island. In 2009, Angel co-produced a documentary about the hate crime killing of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, who was attacked by a group of teens who targeted Latinos in Patchogue. The documentary, Running Wild: Hate and Immigration on Long Island, looks at the aftermath of the attack and its effects on those living in the Patchogue-Medford area.

Prior to this film, he worked at WNBC-TV for “Positively Black,” a weekly four-minute segment covering issues and stories of interest to African-Americans and one of WNBC’s longest running segments. He also assisted in the production of news by writing and formatting scripts for “Weekend Today in New York.”  Additionally, he worked at Telemundo, contributing to “Al Rojo Vivo” and “Noticiero Telemundo” news shows.

Angel graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a bachelor’s degree in writing and politics. He also holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. He is fluent in Spanish and Italian.
