Isabel Sepulveda of OLA, Lucius Ware from the NAACP Eastern LI Chapter, Javier Gallardo from the Long Island Civic Participation Project, and Saul Linares of the Workplace Project joined Long Island Immigrant Alliance (LIIA) director Luis Valenzuela for a visit with Congressman Tim Bishop this week. The East End Congressman has been a long-time supporter of sensible immigration reform. In recent weeks, he has been a tea party target, with loud protesters at his town hall meetings. LIAA wanted to reassure him that the bulk of Long Islanders agree that immigration reform is needed. Saul Linares delivered 500 postcards supporting reform to the Congressman.
Luis and I also joined a large delagation organized by the New York Immigration Coalition that met with Senator Schumer last week in New York City. The off-the-record discussion was encouraging.
LIIA is dedicated to reaching out to all of our elected representatives who will play a role in passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
