Standing While Latino is not a Crime The Long Island Immigrant Alliance recently spearheaded a campaign to defeat an anti-immigrant ordinance under consideration by the Suffolk County legislature. The bill criminalizes "standing while Latino" by unfairly targeting day laborers seeking work.
The defeat of Suffolk County's "standing while Latino" legislation was huge victory for Immigrant rights activists in Long Island. The legislation was a forerunner for the current enforcement only approach to immigration sweeping the country.
The Long Island Immigrant Alliance proved that through coalition building with Unions, community organizations, and progressive activists we can roll back the enforcement agenda that will prove ineffective and harmful to our local economy.

The Immigration 101 series was started to increase awareness of immigration issues. It tracks my course in immigration law at Hofstra University School of Law in Hempstead. It does not attempt to recreate lectures I give in the course, but instead it uses the structure of the course to organize the often disparate-seeming elements of immigration law.
